The Two Christmas Islands
There are two Christmas Islandsin in the world, one a territory of Australia in the Indian Ocean and the other within an independent island nation in the south Pacific Ocean. The Indian Ocean island known today as Christmas Island is a territory of Australia. That island is about 11 miles long and about 4.5 miles wide at its narrowest point. The island of Kiritimati in the Pacific island nation of Kiribati is also known as Christmas Island, and in fact "Kiritibati" is a a local style pronounciation of the world "Christmas".
