Betio Game Fishing Competition
Monthly fishing tournament in South Tarawa featuring weigh-ins and celebrating at Captain's Bar in Betio.

Kiribati Independence Day
The official holiday is on July 12 but the festivities usually begin a few days earlier. Most of the celebratory events are in South Tarawa and they include canoe races, kite flying, traditional dancing, and sports tournaments such as rugby and wrestling.

Youth Day
August 4th is a day for recognizing and support the youth of Kiribati through workshops and other programs at churches, meeting houses, and other venues.

Kiribati Music and Dance Performances
Kiribati has its own unique forms of folk music and dancing featuring chanting, body precussion, and guitar music.

Christmas in Kiribati
In addition to church-going, gift-exchanging, and feasting, the period between Christmas and the New Year is a time for choir and dance performances, canoe racing, and many other family activities such as camping in Taiwan Park and visiting nearby islands.

New Year Celebrations
Kiribati are the first country in the world to welcome the New Year because its Line Islands are adjacent to the International Date Line. At one time the date line ran through the middle of Kiribati but that was changed to allow the entire country to experience the same day at the same time.
